History of Roquebrune Cap Martin

The first Indo-European people to occupy these lands were the Ligurians. They left tracks of their time here and elsewhere in the Alps Maritimes by building architectural masterpieces. The proximity of Nikaia (Nice’s old Greek name) as a trading centre benefited Roquebrune and developed it as a privileged destination. It was also located on the Roman Road so Lombardi, Saracens, conquerors, pirates or adventurers stopped here seeking protection or to hide from the bands of pirates.

Roquebrune was spared from the terrible black plague, which decimated most of Europe in the 15th century. This safe haven acted as a miraculous secure place for the Côte d’Azur, also badly affected by the epidemic. In the Middle Ages Roquebrune was conquered by Genoa, Ventimiglia, the counties of Tende and Beuil, the Reign of Sardinia, France and continuously attacked by barbarians. In the 17th century it became part of the kingdom of the Principality of Monaco, and only in 1848 and 1860 did it manage to gain its freedom, finally becoming part of the French State.

Roquebrune is situated on the top of a hill, affording spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea from the tower of its beautiful castle. Visitors can nearly reach out and almost touch Monte-Carlo and Cap Martin. Roquebrune is so close to the Principality that their borders blur.
